Gingerbread Party For Children's Church

We threw the children's church kids a gingerbread party yesterday. Last year we let the kids try to build their own gingerbread houses out of graham crackers, and it didn't work so well, because the frosting we used was not hard enough. (frosting from a can does not dry hard therefore does not work) duh! You think we would have understood that. So this year we tried it a little different.

My husband constructed about 27 (very hideous looking) houses for them the night before. (I helped a little.) He never got his Gingerbread Carpenter License as you can tell from the photos. He's use to working with wood and nails, not graham crackers and frosting

We used a powdered sugar icing that dries into a very hard glue to stick the graham crackers together. We took them to church the next day and let the kids decorate them. This was a lot easier for them. Last year they just ran out of time trying to get it built and decorated. There was styrofoam bowls filled with different kinds of candies for each table. We had gummy bears, peppermints, sweet tarts, mints, gum drops, candy canes, and more. We also had cans of frosting for them to ice their church house. We put on some Christmas music to set the mood for them. We also brought the graham crackers and powdered sugar in case someone wanted to add to their Church house.

We served them hot chocolate with marshmallows and gave them a candy cane to stick down in their cup. That is if the candy cane survived the hot liquid and didn't melt into practically nothing. Mine didn't make it. So disappointing, you know. My husband wanted to try different flavored candy canes this year instead of peppermint, so we got sweet tart candy canes. Some of the kids liked them, and some did not.

I bought a Foil Gingerbread Door Curtain from Oriental Trading to hang in front of the door in the children's church area.

Here is some pictures of what the kids made.
They covered their church houses in snow obviously.

Next Sunday.... were doing a "Happy Birthday Jesus Party" for the kids. I'm looking forward to posting some pictures on that!

Here is a picture of my gingerbread house I made at my house one year. I was just playing around having fun to see what I could come up with.  Too bad you can't see the peanut chimney in the back. It was really neat...I was proud of that haha.

I actually have this picture along with the directions on how to make this same Gingerbread house on my other website at www.ChurchHouseChristmas.com. Go to the page to see the directions on what candy you need.

Give Hope To The Helpless

As many as 27 million women and children are in slavery today―working in forced labor or sexual servitude. The captors use brutal tactics to lure their victims and break them down.

Your support can help rescue and lead them to freedom in Christ.

The promise of a better-paying job led Alena to leave her home in Belarus for a brighter future in Greece. Never imagining she’d be enslaved by sex traffickers, she found herself locked in an apartment with five other enslaved women. She endured severe beatings, violent rapes and extreme emotional torment that extinguished her will to fight back. Men came in and used her as they pleased. She feared daily for her life, and God heard her cries.

Rescued from her former captors, she is now learning about her worth in Christ in the safety of a rescue home supported by Hand of Hope. Alena is only one of millions of women and children who’ve fallen prey to human traffickers today.

Happy Birthday Jesus Penguin Bulletin Board And Nativity Bulletin Board

Here is my Happy Birthday Jesus Penguin Bulletin Board I did in the children's church room. You can buy the penguin bulletin board set from many different places. Such as MPM School Supplies or Trend Enterprises or Amazon. You can do a search for Playful Penguins Bulletin Board Set on the internet and see what you find and look for a good price.

I have a very large bulletin board and did two different themes. I did the Happy Birthday Jesus Penguin theme on one side and the Nativity on the other side. I covered the entire board in red bulletin board paper and trimmed it out in a light blue icicle trim. I separated the bulletin board in the middle using the icicle blue trim. I stacked the penguins on top of each other like they were standing on each others heads. They are standing on ice blocks. There was snowflakes included in the set. I got the Happy Birthday Jesus Banner from Oriental Trading.

Here is the Nativity scene I did on the other side. You can purchase this from Children's Ministry Resource Co.  I just added some large snowflakes that I had on hand from another bulletin board set that I had.

Shiny Swirly Ornament Toilet Paper Roll Craft For Christmas

Shiny Swirly Ornament
from a Toilet Paper Roll

Toilet paper roll
Scissors
Glue
Glitter
Hole punch
Ornament hanger or yarn

Christmas is a wonderful time to teach children how they can let their light shine by helping others.  A simple way to bring cheer to someone is by making this shiny, swirly ornament just for that person.

First cut along the seams of the toilet roll.  When it is opened you will see that the toilet paper roll was actually made form a parallelogram.  Now, trim off some of the pointed edges.  (See picture)

Working on one section at a time, spread on glue evenly.  I used white school glue, but I think a glue stick would have been easier.  Hold the ornament over a paper plate or anything that will catch the glitter that falls.  Sprinkle the glitter generously.  Repeat until both sides are covered.  When the glue is dry, punch a hole in one end and inset an ornament hanger or a piece of yarn.  Roll the cardboard back up tightly and release to tighten the swirl.

Give the ornament to someone and watch their face light up!

Nativity Sunday School Lesson

Luke 2:1  And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Luke 2:2  (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

Luke 2:3  And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

Luke 2:4  And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

Luke 2:5  To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

Luke 2:6  And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

Luke 2:7  And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2:8  And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Luke 2:9  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

Luke 2:10  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

Luke 2:11  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:12  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Luke 2:13  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Luke 2:14  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Luke 2:15  And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

Luke 2:16  And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Luke 2:17  And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

Luke 2:18  And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

Luke 2:19  But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

Luke 2:20  And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Luke 2:21  And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Angel Tree Topper Craft "Luke 2:10" For Christmas

Angel Tree Toppers
Luke 2:10 Craft

We made Angel Tree Toppers in class. The angel has the words, "LUKE 2:10" written on the front of the angel. This craft goes with the story from Luke 2:10. Tell the bible story that goes along with this and let them make this cute little craft.

We ran out of time in class when the kids were making these and didn't get to add glitter to their hands, however I am sure the parents were grateful for that! lol They may not have wanted glitter in their car. haha

I took a picture of the angel tree toppers the kids made at church.
This is the picture of them below.

This is how you make it.
 Grab one paper plate.

Cut your paper plate in half.

Shape both paper plates into a cone and staple or tape.

This is what they should look like.

Stack one on top of the other like this.
This is for the dress of the angel.

Pick a color of construction paper out that you want the angel wings to be. I used yellow but the kids in my class used different colors. Have the child trace their hand onto the construction paper or cardstock and cut them out. You might have to help some if they can't trace their own hand.

Now smear glue on it and sprinkle glitter if you want. Or you could wait until you finish the angel to add the glitter.

Now either you draw the head with hair or let the kids draw it
and cut it out. Then tape the head to the front. You could also draw them a bow or they can do their own and cut that out and let them tape the bow under the angel's head. If you can't do this then just have them add a ribbon made into a bow or you could just have the kids draw the bow on to the front with a black marker or crayon. Or you could just leave the bow off. We didn't get to that part either during class time.

Make a paper halo or you could use a pipe cleaner. Just stick down into the top of the angel topper and tape to the back of the head.

Have them decorate her dress by adding peel and stick stickers or jewels. We used peel and stick crosses from Oriental Trading. Then smear a line of glue across the top and bottom ruffled part of the dress and add glitter. Have the kids write Luke 2:10 on the front of their angel.

Now let the kids take this home and hang up on top of their tree. Or you could staple them to your bulletin board in your classroom and add the words, "Fear Not, For I Bring You Good Tidings Of Great Joy". This would make a fantastic Christmas bulletin board for December.

Don't forget to tell the bible story from Luke 2:10 that goes with this.
